Gisborne

(population 33.000)

This is the most eastern city of New Zealand. Besides that it is the first city in the world seeing sun rise. There are many farms, located around town, producing fruits etc. Finally: the city attracts many surfers year in year out.

Outdoor

Beaches and surfing

Gisborne is a very popular surf area; there are many nice Beaches and there is lots of sunshine. Also for the sun bathers and swimmers Gisborne is a good place to visit!

Waikanae Beach is a good beach for beginning surfers in particular. The other Beaches are more suitable for the experienced surfers. If you do not have your own surfboard and or would like to take some lessons than you are in Gisborne at the right place as well.

Horse riding

If you like horses and like to ride on the beach: undertake a horse ride trip in Gisborne.

Marine mammal watching

Gisborne offers the opportunity to attend a whale spotting tour. For more adventurous types amongst us: attend a tour in which you will meet mako sharks.

Tramping

Gisborne is famous for its beautiful gardens. In Eastwoodhill Arboretum you can follow an almost hour taking walking track. The Botanic Gardens are also nice to wander around in. For the ones who would like to make a longer walk: try the nice Te Kuri Walkway.

There are quite a few statutes of Captain Cook in town.

Maori Marae

Te Poho-O-Rawire meeting house

This is the largest Maori meeting house of New Zealand. There is a Maori Church nearby.

Museums

East Coast Musuem of Technology and Transport

This name speaks for itself; the museum discusses topics around technology and transport.

Tairawhiti Museum

This museum has a nice exhibition about Maori, early settlers and nature.

Te Moana Maritime Museum

This speaks for itself.

Vine yards

There are many vine yards in the area around Gisborne. You can go to vine yards by attending a tour or going there by your own. You should not forget some vine yards are not opened for visitors who do not attend a tour.
