Whakatane

(population 18.000)

Whakatana is the place where Whakatana River empties in the Bay of Plenty. This town is famous in the Maori Myth of the birth of New Zealand; their New Zealand: Aotearoa. It is a nice town with lots of sunshine. Most of the visitors come to this quite pleasant town for the nearby Beaches. Furthermore: many Outdoor activities can be booked in this town to undertake in the nearby area; there enough to do.

This is a good place to make a swim with the dolphins; they are present most of the time.

Tramping

There are some nice tramping options in and just around Whakatane. Please visit a DOC for additional information. Some nice walks: White Pine Bush Walk and Kohi Point Walkway.

Whakatane Museum

This is a very nice museum. The museum features History of the Maori and the European settlers in this region. It also discusses the nature in this area, including the Whakaari volcano just off the coast.
