Around Auckland

The region Around Auckland is blessed with nice Beaches on which water activities can be undertaken. Also a rugged coastline can be found in this area. Besides this there are many nice parks and nature areas in which tramps can be made. In conclusion: beautiful area on Auckland’s doorstep.

Outdoor

Beaches and surfing

Piha and Karekare Beaches are nice Beaches to visit. Please keep in mind the currents make swimming dangerous most of the times, so be aware. On both Beaches Surfing can be done, for the more experienced surfers Karekare Beach is the best. Another Surfing beach is Muriwai Beach. Whatipu beach is also a nice one to visit, not in particular for Surfing though. Bethells Beach is a black sand beach and is famous for the walks it is offering.

Bird watching

At Muriwai Beach a gannet colony can be watched.

Scenic driving routes

The State Highway 24 (SH24) is known as a scenic driving route. The route is 28km long and brings you to Maori History, good walking tracks, and an old tramline and to beautiful nature.

Tramping

The region Around Auckland has many nice parks in which tramping can be undertaken. The Waitakere Ranges is a good example of a nice tramping place. Examples of good tracks are: Upper Kauri Track and the Pukematekeo Track. If you would like to make a walk near a beach, Bethells Beach is the place to visit.

Culture and Entertainment

Cultural buildings and places

If you are interested in historical buildings, a visit to Helensville (population 2500) is a nice thing to undertake.

Vineyards

The area Around Auckland has a wine producing History. There are many nice wineries (including bar and restaurant) which can be visited.
