Hokianga Region

This part of Northland & Auckland is sometimes referred to as the Kiwi outback. This area encompasses a harbor, some nice villages and beautiful nature. Especially for people who would like to go off the beaten track this is a good area to visit.

Outdoor

Beaches

There is a nice beach Near Signal Station Point. Of course many more (remote) Beaches are present in this area.

Cruising

There are opportunities to make a cruise in this area. During these cruises you will see beautiful gold colored san dunes.

Extreme(r) sports

You can book a tour which includes sand boarding on the dunes near the coast.

Kayak

It is possible to explore the, by sand dunes characterized, coast by kayaking, with a tour or on your own.

Horse riding

There is a company offering a variety of horse tracks.

Tramping

Pakia Hill is a nice place to walk on. It will provide you some beautiful views. Also Arai-Te Recreation Reserve is a nice area to walk in. Hokianga-Waipoua Coastal Track is a 16 hours tramp of which you can also walk parts only. Other nice tramps are for example the Six Foot Track and climbing Mount Whiria. In Rawene (village) you can do the boardwalk through mangrove forest. Finally Puketi & Omahuta Forests are nice places to walk. For more information please visit a DOC in the area.

Cultural buildings and places

Kohukohu (village)

This village is characterized by its many historical buildings.

Mitimiti (village)

This is a small Maori village. For the ones interesting in Maori’s in today’s Society, about their Culture and History: this is a nice place to spend a night. It will enhance your knowledge about the Maori’s.

Rawene (village), Cleondon House

There are many nice historical buildings in this village. Including Clendon House.

Museum

Omapere Museum (Rawene village)

This museum features the hippy times of this area and tells a story about a dolphin.
