Russell

In earlyer times Russell was a Maori settlement. This town also has a turbulent History concerning the European settlers and their relation with the Maori. Nowadays Russell is peaceful and pretty; it can be considered as romantic. A lot of tours on the waters of the Bay of Islands depart from this by colonial buildings characterized town.

Beach

Long Beach is the closest beach to town. Russell also has an unofficial nudist beach.

Kayaking

There is a possibility to rent a kayak. On a nice day this is a very good way to explore Russell’s nearby coastline.

Tramping

The walk from Russell to Long Beach is a nice one.

Russel claims to have the oldest building of New Zealand, including the oldest church: Christ Church.
