New Plymouth

New Plymouth is “the” base to explore the volcanic Mount Egmont or its other more often used (Maori) name Mount Taraniki. New Plymouth is a coastal city with on clear days providing views on the impressive Mount Taraniki. The town is surrounded by perfect agriculture and dairy landscapes. The land has rich soil due to the volcano; Mount Taraniki.

Outdoor

Aerial sight seeing

There are quite a view companies offering scenic flights by plain and or helicopter. Many tours go to Mount Taraniki (Mount Egmont). On a clear day this is an excellent trip.

Beaches, surfing and windsurfing

Fitzroy and East End Beaches are truly surfers Mecca Beaches. There are more Beaches. You can of course surf with your own equipment, but can also rent it. Lessons can be booked at these beautiful surf and windsurf Beaches.

Bird and marine mammal watching

On Suger Loaf Islands Marine Park you will be able to spot many bird species. Also lots of seals can be spotted on this island.

Tramping

You can do a nice Heritage Walkway. The leaflet can be obtained at the tourist office. Other nice city walks can be made in parks. Some parks: Pukekura Park and Kawaroa Park. Paritutu Hill is very beautiful to climb. There are also some nice coastal walks. For more information please visit a DOC and, or a tourist information center.

Cultural buildings and places

Fitzroy Pole

This place is in early times erected by Maoris. To emphasize the point from where the land was belonging to Maori and could not be claimed by the European settlers.

Puke Ariki Panding

This is a historical area in town.

Richmond Cottage

This cottage was build of stone in stead of wood. It is interesting to have a look at this old building.

Galleries

Govett-Brewster Art Gallery

This is a through New Zealand known and rewarded art gallery. It is known for its (international) innovative and surprising exhibitions.

Museums

Puke Ariki Museum

This museum has interesting information about Maori, early settlers and has wildlife displayed.
