Otaki

This nice town is the best base to explore the Tararua Range. The town itself has a prevalent Maori History; it is blessed with many Marae (Maori meeting houses). The town has also a Maori college.

Scenic driving routes

Take the SH1 towards inland direction, this route will be lovely to follow.

Tramping

Tararua Forest Park offers nice tramps. You can do a short tramp or undertake a longer one including staying a night or some nights in huts.
