South Island

The dominating features of the southern island of New Zealand are the Southern Alps. The Alps are present in the four regions. The literally highlight of the Southern Alps can be found in Canterbury; the 3755 meter high Mount Cook. Other major attractions of the Alps are the Fox- and Franz Josef glaciers. Exciting glacier walks are offered in the equal named townships.

The contradiction of the landscape makes the southern island probably as beautiful as it is. Besides its rough and impressive Alps you will come across the Canterbury Plains (Canterbury), the rolling hills in Otago & Southland’s east coast and the peninsula rich Marlborough & Nelson region.

South Island has an abundance of Outdoor activities to offer, this is where the island is famous for; from tramping in spectacular Fiordland National Park (Otago & Southland) to bungy jumping in Queenstown; “The Adrenaline Capital”.

If you are looking fore some Culture and Entertainment a visit to Christchurch is a must. This capital of the southern island has a perfect mix between the present and the past. You will come across many museums, trendy pubs, superb restaurants and galleries.

Besides South Island’s geological beauty and the abundance of flora the island has many seal mammals on its shoreline. You can not leave the country without having seen a seal, dolphin, whale or sea lion. The ultimate sea mammal spot place is Kaikoura. (See Marlborough & Nelson)

Equal to the northern island the southern has many wineries. The “New Zealand Wine Capital” lies on this island; it is Marlborough area (Marlborough & Nelson). Many tours are offered to these top quality wine producing orchards. Another option is to visit them by bike; this will allow you to enjoy the landscape even more.

When the southern island’s mainland does not offer you the "off beaten track feeling” as much as you wish (which is hardly possible): visit Stewart Island. This island is blessed with a very rugged coast, wild inland and very little inhabitants.
