Introduction on Canterbury

Canterbury encompasses the mid east part of the southern island of New Zealand. It is a region with lots of differences; just like New Zealand. From the flat area around Christchurch to the old volcanic Peninsula Banks; from Christchurch, the second city in New Zealand, to remote villages; from the coastal dunes to the highest peak in New Zealand: Aoraki / Mount Cook.

Visiting Canterbury

A visit to Canterbury must include a visit to Christchurch. This second largest city of New Zealand has the perfect mix between older and modern times. Many old buildings and sights can be seen; afterwards relaxing in a very trendy café with modern art hanging on the walls makes a visit to Christchurch perfect.

The ones who are looking for real adventure and rough landscape can escape the flatter areas of Canterbury by going to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. When driving up there: Mackenzie Country is also very much worth visiting. Here you can enjoy the many lakes, rivers and breathtaking views.

In wintertime Canterbury has lots to offer: winter sports activities. You can just ski, snowboard, cross country ski, heli ski: name it. This is possible in the during summer time also o so beautiful Arhur’s Pass National Park, Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, Hanmer Springs: lots opportunities even besides the mentioned ones.

In summer Canterbury offers activities from aerial sight seeing to tramping; from kayaking to Scuba Diving; from Bird Watching to Hunting; from visiting art galleries to visiting vineyards.

Economy of Canterbury

Canterbury’s Economy is as diverse as its landscape. AgriCulture is a very important driving force in Canterbury. The sheep industry is a vital part in the agriculture sector; this is in particular applicable to Mackenzie Country. Furthermore many wines are being produced in the area north and around Christchurch. Christchurch is the commercial center of Canterbury; its Economy is dependant on tourism, like to whole region, the commercial and service sector and also a bit of manufacturing.

History of Canterbury

Canterbury’s History is interesting. In 1850 the capital of Canterbury, Christchurch was founded by the English, they wanted to make this a model of class structured England in this area of the world. Some years in advance the French almost made New Zealand their colony, they arrived a couple of days to late in New Zealand; the British just made it their colony. Still on Peninsula Banks with in particular its main urban settlement, Akaroa, the French heritage is very prevalent. Of course the Maroi were already way before the Europeans came inhabiting this part of New Zealand, their historic trails can still be seen by rock carvings and lots of museums exhibiting their History.

Winter: Average 11 degrees Celsius.

Year round: Average 1965 sun hours and 700mm annual rainfall.
