Mackenzie Country

This part of Canterbury is blessed with some amazing lakes with beautiful scenery on the background; Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. Tekapo is a township nesting on the edge of the turquoise waters of the glacial Lake Tekapo. Twizel is another town in this beautiful area.

Aerial sight seeing

It is possible to book a sight seeing tour above Mackenzie Country. You can also book tours which go to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.

Bird watching

The lakes and rivers of Mackenzie Country are very popular under birds, including the rare black silt. You can book a bird watch tour, but can also do it on your own.

Fishing

Most of the lakes and rivers in Mackenzie Country are perfect for catching some fish. Fore more information you can go to a DOC.

Mountainbiking

There are some nice mountainbikespots in this area, but the most exciting thing to do concerning mountianbiking is to go downhill, with a helicopter bringing you uphill.

Tramping

There are some popular walks to Mount John's summit. Other walks are to McGregor Lakes, in Lake Ohau and in Ohau Forests. For more information please ask an employee of a DOC or a visitor centre in the area.

Skiing and snowboarding

Mackenzie Country has excellent ski- and snowboard slopes. Cross country skiing and downhill skiing are options as well. Some of the ski areas in Mackenzie Country are: Mount Dobson, Fox Peak and Round Hill.

Church of the Good Sheperd

This church is built in 1945. It lies on the shore of Lake Tekapo.

Statue of a Collie Dog

This is a remembrance of all collie dogs helping Mackenzie Country's sheep industry to develop. This statue is standing near the Church of the Good Sheperd (sea above)
