Timaru

This town functions for tourist very often as a convenient stop between Christchurch and the south of the south of the island; Otaga & Southland. Timaru is a port city which is of vital importance to the agriculture sector in the south of Canterbury. In older times whaling has been done in this town.

Beaches and surfing

There are some nice Beaches around town. Some are excellent for swimming, others are better for Surfing.

Marine mammal watching

Like in many places in New Zealand also Timaru has some marine mammals to watch. There are some mammals around the port, including dolphins and seals. You can book a tour in town.

Tramping

There are some nice walk just outside the town(‘s centre), for example the walk along Caroline Bay. For more information please visit the tourist center.

A festival is being held from the 26th of December till the beginning of January.
