Kahurangi National Park

This is New Zealand’s second largest national park and is without a doubt one of the nicest to visit. It is an ecological wonder with its many birds, plants and limestone landscapes. Besides that this park has the largest cave system of the southern hemisphere.

Outdoor

Bird watching

This 500,000 hectares of national park contains more than 100 bird species. Spotting the bird species in this beautiful landscape makes it a nice place for bird watchers to visit.

Caving

Kahurangi National Park has the largest cave system below the equator. This will offer enough opportunities for “cavers” to cave. One of the caves is the Rawhiti Cave. This is the largest cave that can be entered in New Zealand. For more information please visit one of the tourist offices in the Nelson region.

Tramping

Heaphy Track is a Great Walk (look at Tramping), it meanders trough Kahurangi National Park. This path follows historic footsteps (gold mining etc.). Besides having historic soil under your hiking boots you will see a wide variety of scenery on this Great Walk. The walk is easy and takes 5 days. The best time to tramp this track is from October till May.

Another famous walk in this park is the Wangapeka Track. This track will bring you up to a 1000 m saddle. You will also pass some beech forested valleys. This track is moderate ranked, can best be walked from November till April and takes 5 days.
