Kaikoura Area
Kaikoura (4000 inhabitants), "The Whale Watch Capital of the World", is a surprising town with on one side the South Pacific Ocean and on the other steeply rising hills of the Seaward Kaikouras. In winter these are snowcapped, which makes the scenery even better. The main attraction of Kaikoura Area is its wildlife just in front of its coast, including sperm whales. Furthermore Fishing, Hunting, Horse Riding, Surfing and many more activities can be undertaken in this beautiful area.
Outdoor
Beaches
There are some excellent bays for swimming and snorkeling, for example Jimmy Armer's Beach.
Horse riding
Kaikoura Area has some ideal spots for Horse Riding on your own or with a tour. Examples of nice spots are the coastline, the riverbeds, the forests and hills of this area.
Marine mammal watching and aerial sight seeing
At the end of Kaikoura Peninsula you will be able to spot a seal colony. You can also see seals and dolphins from very close; you can swim with them if booking a tour.
A whale watch tour can either be done on a boat or by plane. The advantage of a tour by plain is that you see the whale as a whole in stead of its tale only.
The marine mammals living in the area of Kaikoura, are dusky dolphins, hector dolphins, seals, bottlenose dolphins, orcas, pilot and sperm whales, blue penguins and more. Do not expect to see them all, but whenever you go you will see one of them, at least.
Scuba diving
Because of the rocky coast of Kaikoura (Peninsula) and the abundance of wildlife this area is perfect for scuba divers. If you do not have the skills and or equipment for diving on your own, you can book a diving tour.
Skiing and snowboarding
Some kilometers southwest of Kaikoura Mount Lyford offers the opportunity to ski during wintertime.
Surfing
There are some excellent Surfing Beaches north of Kaikoura Town.
Tramping
There are some excellent short walks on for example Kaikoura Peninsula. During these walks you will probably spot some seals. There are some inland tramps as well. It is also an option to undertake the multiple day walk along the coast south of Kaikoura Town.
For more information concerning walking please go to a DOC or to the tourist office of Kaikoura.
