Picton
(population 3700)Picton is the gateway of the southern island to the northern one; the ferries depart from here. Besides that it is a pretty and friendly town. It has some nice galleries, cafes and restaurants. Furthermore: It is the best base to explore the Marlborough Sounds. Most of the tour operators, rental companies and public transport to hotspots in the Sounds are present in this nice town.

Tramping
Tirohanga Walkway is a walk beginning at Newgate Street and will take you about 45 minutes. This tramp will offer some very nice panoramic views on Picton and the sounds near the town.

Aquarium of the Marlborough Sounds
This is worth visiting when having children. It also has a playground nearby.
Edwin Fox Maritime Museum
In this maritime centre you will find a dry dock with the world’s 9th oldest ship in it. It is the oldest remaining East Indian ship in the world. The ships name is Edwin Fox, it lies in Picton’s Dunbar Wharf.
Picton Community Museum
This museum depicts interesting and varying information. Topics are Maori Culture, whaling, early settlers, and Marlborough Dairy Factory display.
