The buildings are carved out limestone. A group of heritage enthusiast has preserved and refurbished some in Victorian style; how it used to be. The harbor of Oamaru is said to be New Zealand's only remaining Victorian harbor. Currently the city is home to many artists and is blessed with beautiful gardens. Oamaru is blessed with more: it provides access to two penguin colonies; the rare blue penguin colony and the yellow eyed colony.
