Stewart Island

This is New Zealand's third largest island; 65 by 40km (on the widest point). This island is very popular amongst people looking for wild and remote areas. Since recent years Rakiura National Park exists and encompasses more tan 80% of the island. The island has a very small population (420), offers nice Beaches, rocky coastline and has spectacular walks. The sunset is spectacular blood red and the island is often exposed to harsh southern winds.

Outdoor

Bird and marine mammal watching

There are possibilities to see some beautiful birds on this island, including the penguin. Stewart Island is also blessed with seals and other sea mammals. It is possible to try to discover them on you own. A marine mammal and or Bird Watching trip can be made as well.

There are many Kiwis on the island. Tours are offered to try to spot them. Do not be disappointment when you will not see them; they are very difficult to spot in wild. The best place to find them is at Mason Bay.

Cruising and fishing

It is possible to make a cruise at the coastline of the island. This can be combined with Fishing.

Kayaking

There is a possibility to rent a Kayak on this island. Exploring the coastline of Stewart Island in a kayak is a very nice way to enjoy its beautiness as much as possible.

Tramping

There are many nice tramps on this unspoiled island. It is a trampers Walhalla. Rakiura Track is a Great Walk (look at Tramping) which takes 3 days and is moderate concerning its difficulty. This Great Walk will bring you to sheltered shores, beautiful Beaches and a wonderful rocky coastline. Another walk is the Northwest Circuit; this is a demanding tramp and is only suitable for very experienced walkers; it takes 10 days. This tramp will bring you to muddy bays, pristine Beaches and a wide variety of wildlife.

There are also possibilities to undertake some guided walks on the island.
