Wanaka Region
This region is blessed with awesome cliffs, hills and mountains. Also beautiful lakes can be found in this region. Wanaka Region is the area around Wanaka town. Outdoor
Aerial sight seeing
It is possible to do a paraglide or a skydive. By doing this you will see the beautiful Environment from above. Other options are making a scenic flight in a plain or helicopter.
Caving
In summertime Wanaka Region offers great opportunities for canyoning. You need to do this via a tour operator (for your own Safety). A tour includes climbing, swimming and abseiling through caves.
Extreme(r) sports
On River Clutha and Hawea and more, it is possible to do river sledging. This means white water sledging on boogie board kind of rafts.
Fishing
Some great Fishing can be done on Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. Please do not forget that you need to have a license for inland Fishing. This license can be obtained at a DOC. For more information look at: "Things to Do", "Outdoor", "Fishing".
Horse riding
There are some daytrip options to undertake in Wanaka Region.
Jetboating
At for example the Clutha River you can do Jetboating.
Mountainbiking
At the DOC in for example Wanaka, some information about mountainbiking can be obtained. There are various tracks in the area, for experienced and inexperienced bikers. It is also possible to do alpine mountainbiking. For these kind of tracks you should contact a local tour operator.
Kayaking and white water rafting
There are easy white water raft trips on the Clutha River. At the Hawea, Clutha and Matukituki Rivers kayaking is possible. Not year around though, in winter times this is not possible.
Skiing and snowboarding
There are some ski areas in Wanaka Region. There are some tours offered including the heli ski option and a cross country skiing option.
Tramping
Wanaka Region offers many interesting tramps. Information can be found in the brochure Wanaka Walks. This brochure can be obtained at a DOC near or in Wanaka Region. Examples of tramps are the 1,5 hour climb to Mt Iron and the 6 hour climb to Mt Roy (both times include the way backwards).
