Westcoast

Introduction on Westcoast

The Westcoast exists of the mid west part of the southern island of New Zealand. This region has some stunning area’s nature wise. Paparoa National Park, the Franz Josef- and the Fox Glaciers are examples of the Westcoasts impressive nature. Furthermore this region is characterized by its old mining industries, some nice towns and beautiful lakes.

Visiting Westcoast

On a nice quite and sunny day the Westcoast is a magic piece of land containing snow topped mountains, glistering lakes and beautiful rainforests. This magical land is a paradise for Outdoor lovers. There are beach and forest walks for experienced and inexperienced. Furthermore Caving, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, Surfing, glacier walks, name it, is possible.

In the more northern part of Westcoast lots of historical mining sights will be found. Besides that the beauty of the “Pancake” (Paparoa National Park) rocks is impressive. A visit to them should not be skipped. Also Lake Brunner is a recommendable area to visit, in particular when being a fish fanatic.

The more south you will travel in Westcoast the more dominant the (snow topped) mountains become. Here you will come across a perfect area to undertake lots of nice walks, drives and other out door activities. The Tasman Sea is beautiful to go to; at some places you will even be able to spot marine mammals and penguins. The lakes with in particular Lake Matheson are a must to visit, from most of the lakes you have impressive views with the snow topped mountains on the background; breathtaking. Of course a visit to at least one of the two glaciers which can be visited (Fox and Franz Josef) should be made. Furthermore the mountains are full with other glaciers, ice formation and so on; making a (heli) flight will be an unforgettable experience.

Economy of Westcoast

In the mid 19th century many Europeans arrived because of the gold rush. The gold rush ended and other sources of income had to be found and exploited. Nowadays the Westcoasts economic driving forces are: farming, forestry, Fishing and the not to be forgotten tourism industry. Every annum Westcoat gets many visitors undertaking lots of activities in the beautiful nature of this part of New Zealand.

History of Westcoast

The Westcoat's History is a rich one. First the Maori arrived in this beautiful area. They were looking for greenstone and found lots of it. Nowadays greenstone is still being found and being processed into nice sculptors and jewelry. In the 19th century the gold rush started; around the world. This caused a major change for Westcoast. Thousands of Europeans longing for finding gold came to this area and settled themselves. The spurs of this era are still prevalent, with in particular the northern part of Westcoast.
