Hokitika

(population 3500)

Hokitika is located at the mouth of the Hokitika River. It is a nice town offering many shopping opportunities. The town is home for many artists and is internationally renowned as a centre of creative arts. The artists are inspired by the local landscape it’s gifts: jade, the Ruby Rock (Goodletite) and gold. From Hokitika many nice Outdoor activities can be undertaken in the surrounding area, please look at “Westcoast” “Hokitika Area”.

Tramping

There is a Hokitika Heritage Walk bringing you to the waterfront and to the Custom House. A leaflet can be obtained from the tourist information or DOC.

Also walks at the glow worm dell can be made. This is a walk from just of the highway to the dell. Visit it after getting dark; then the worms start to glow.

Cultural activity

Jade Carving

This is an all day activity in which you will carve your own creation out of jade.

New Zealand Eco Centre

This centre has a nice aquarium with sharks and other marine life. Besides marine wildlife some land mammals and reptiles are shown.

Festivals

Wildfoods Festival

This is a major bush food festival held annually in mid March. It is getting more and more popular. If being in the area this festival should not be missed.

West Coast Historical Museum

This museum provides interesting information about Maori’s and the European settlers, and more.

Souvenirs and shopping

Souvenirs at Tancred Street

In Hokitika are many nice souvenirs for sale, from jade to wood carvings. The bulk of these shops can be found at Tancred Street.
