Hokitika Area

The more south you will travel: the more dominant the mountains become. This area is blessed with many forests, lakes, hills, small mountains and excellent views on the huge mountains in the south(east).

Outdoor

Canoeing and kayaking

Lake Kaniere provides en excellent Environment to canoe and or to kayak.

Caving

Approximately 30 kilometers south of Hokitika you can visit the amazing Hokitika Gorge. This gorge is filled with glacial turquoise waters of the Hokitika River.

Sailing

At Lake Kaniere it is possible to attend a sailing tour. What is better than on a nice day seeing the beautiful area from the lake itself?

Tramping

There are some nice tramps near the Hokitika Gorge. The tramps in this area go through nice forests. Other nice places to tramp are: Lake Kaniere, Dorothy Falls and Kahikatea Forest and Canoe Cove. Some of the tramps offered there are: Lake Kaniere Walkway (4 hours) and Mahinapua Walkway (4,5 hours). More information can be obtained at the local DOC or tourist information.

Museums

Miners Cottage Museum in Ross, a small town

This is an old cottage build in the 19th century. It gives an impression of how people lived at that time.

Ross Golfdfields Visitors Centre

In the small town, named Ross, is a museum. Here you will see a scale model of the town of how it looked like in the gold mine period; this period was flourishing in the 19th century.
