Okarito Area
Okarito is a small settlement surrounded by beautiful nature. The area around Okarito is blessed with a peaceful lagoon while being there spectacular views on the Alps can be breathtaking. There are some nice Outdoor activities to be undertaken in this pristine unspoiled area.

Bird watching
The Okarito Lagoon offers a perfect habitat for many water birds. The lagoon is New Zealand’s largest unmodified wetland and is influenced by tides; a unique area to spot birds. It is possible to watch birds on your own; you can also book an (overnight) tour.
Kayaking
There is a company renting kayaks for kayaking on the beautiful Okarito Lagoon and its channels.
Tramping
There are many different walks along the coast near Okarito, some of them go to Okarito Lagoon. When walking some of these tracks you should take the tides into account. For more information please ask information at a DOC or tourist center in the area.
