Westport
(population 3900)In Westport the Buller River empties in the Tasman Sea. In this town many activities can be undertaken. Westport became prosperous during the 19th centuries gold rush. Currently the area around this town is the only mined source of bituminous coal. The extensive mining History can be seen in towns surrounding Westport.

Festivals
Buller Gorge Marathon
Annually every second week in February this marathon is being held. There is always a big party at the end, which can not be missed when being in town.
Cape Classic Surfing Contest
The Labor Day weekend takes place in October. Within that weekend an annual Surfing contest is being held.
Museums
Coaltown Museum
This museum features a good reconstruction of coal mining life. Furthermore it gives insight of the coalmine industry.
