Westport

(population 3900)

In Westport the Buller River empties in the Tasman Sea. In this town many activities can be undertaken. Westport became prosperous during the 19th centuries gold rush. Currently the area around this town is the only mined source of bituminous coal. The extensive mining History can be seen in towns surrounding Westport.

Horse riding

Horse ride activities are offered along the riverbank of the Buller River some kilometers from Westport.

Jetboating

Jetboat tours on the Buller River are offered after a short drive from town.

Marine mammal watching and tramping

Tauranga Bay seal colony can be seen some kilometers from Westport. The Cape Foulwind Walkway passes this colony.

White water rafting

It is possible to undertake white water rafting on the Buller River a few kilometers from town.

Festivals

Buller Gorge Marathon

Annually every second week in February this marathon is being held. There is always a big party at the end, which can not be missed when being in town.

Cape Classic Surfing Contest

The Labor Day weekend takes place in October. Within that weekend an annual Surfing contest is being held.

Museums

Coaltown Museum

This museum features a good reconstruction of coal mining life. Furthermore it gives insight of the coalmine industry.
