Souvenirs and Shopping

Most visitors of New Zealand do not come for shopping. This doesn’t mean most visitors leave with nothing from New Zealand in their suitcases or backpacks; on the contrary.

New Zealand is famous for its sheepskin products and leather goods. Examples of sheepskin products are jackets, gloves etc. Also its jewellery made from natural products is famous, with in particular jewellery made from jade and abalone shell. Also Merino wool is a typical New Zealand product. You can find lots of Merino woolen sweaters, hats, scarves and so on. Maori carvings in wood are very beautiful as well. Many tourists and New Zealanders are fond of them.

Besides the traditional New Zealand products New Zealand’s fashion designers’ and artists’ creations increased in popularity since recent years. The fashion designers and artists tend to be surprisingly innovative and produce high quality products. You can find beautiful designs and art in the many boutiques and galleries New Zealand has.

Most shops are opened from Monday till Saturday. On Thursdays and Fridays they tend to be open late, till about 8 pm or 9 pm. Souvenir shops in the cities and in tourism oriented resorts tend to be opened 7 days a week, with late nights on at least Fridays.
