New Zealand is one of the best fishing places in the world. You can fish for many different species of fish. The lakes and the rivers around and in Lake Taupo (Waikato & Tongariro) are famous for their trout. In the rivers in the south of the southern island you will find one of the best salmon in the world (Otago & Southland).

Saltwater fishing is very popular as well. This is especially applicable for the northern part of the northern island (Northland & Auckland). Some of the fishes you will be able to catch there are: gurnard, mackerel, snapper, porae and flounder.

In the waters of the southern island you will find for example snapper, hake and butterfish. The best place to fish on the southern island are the Marlborough Sounds (Marlborough & Nelson).

The differences in fish species of the northern and the southern island are due to the difference in water temperature.

There are quit a lot opportunities to rent and to buy fishing gear. It is also possible to book fishing tours.
