Marine Mammal Watching

New Zealand is blessed with many marine mammals: dolphins, wales, seals; name it. If you want to know more about New Zealand's marine mammals the following site is interesting to visit: http://www.doc.govt.nz.

The best place to look for marine mammals is Kaikoura (Marlborough & Nelson) . From out of the air and from a boat you can see (depending on the weather condition) sperm whales. This is possible from October till around August. Furthermore you can year round find many seals, dusky dolphins, and pods in Kaikoura. You can even swim with the seals and the dolphins. It is also possible to swim with sharks (in a protecting cage).

Some examples of other places to spot marine mammals: Banks Peninsula (Canterbury) and Hauraki Gulf (Northland & Auckland).

Please also look at category “Things to Do” section “Outdoor” heading “Aerial Sight Seeing”.
