New Zealand consists of two main islands, the northern and the southern. Wellington and Auckland lying respectively: on the most southern tip of the northern island; and the beginning of the northern tip of the northern island. The travel distance from Wellington to Auckland is approximately 660 km and takes on average 9 ½ hours of travel time. Traveling from New Plymouth, the mid west of the northern island, to Gisborne, the mid east of the northern island is takes around 8 ½ hours. The distance is 590 km.
Traveling from Picton in the north of the southern island to Christchurch (mid east coast) takes around 5 hours. The distance is around the 340 km. From Christchurch to the most southern city of the southern island, Invercargill, takes approximately 8 ¼ hours. This distance is 880 km. From Christchurch to Greymouth lying on the mid west coast of the southern island you have to travel 260 km which takes 3 ½ hours.
