Getting Around by Own Motorized Transport

If you stay in a group or longer than around a month buying a car or campervan is the best option. There are many second hands for sale, which you can probably sell for only a little less than you bought it for. Unfortunately there are always risks involved; you can’t sell your car or that the car looses out on you.

You can find many good options at auctions (a famous and good one is Turners Auction, found in most larger cities) and at places were backpackers are; they are selling it because they will leave the country again. The best cities to buy a car are respectively Auckland and Christchurch.

If you purchase a car, campervan or another motorized vehicle: be sure it has a WoF. This is a Warranty of Fitness. This warranty has to be purchased every half year (with newer cars less often). Additional information about Wof can be found at the following government, Land Transport NZ, website: http://www.ltsa.govt.nz. Also make sure the car is registered.

When the actual sale takes place the one who sells the car has to pay the transfer of ownership costs. This transfer costs approximately 10 NZ$. You can pick up the transfer of ownership paperwork at one of New Zealand's Post Offices. Before becoming the owner, make sure there are no outstanding debts on the car. Finally do not forget to obtain liability Insurance for the car. Herefore we refer to State Insurance. This is their website: http://www.state.co.nz.
